Preschool: 2 - 3½ year old

We offer a balanced program which addresses the child as a whole, supporting his and her social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual growth by encouraging him or her to socialize, share, make friends, interact cooperatively, gain independence and self-control and reach her and his full potential. The emphasis in this class is in providing children with a wide variety of learning experiences in various domains (language, movement, science, music, etc). It is a time for children to explore using all their senses and cognitive and emotional capacities. Movement, Language and Artistic expression are the main stars of the program. The teacher’s role is to observe how children engage within activities and begin to build a profile of each child’s preferences, likes and learning styles. With that information, she prepares a fun environment to learn about themselves and the world. Also, children put into practice their intelligences through play (in the first place), projects, and group and individual activities.

Preschool Project Example

What is your favorite room? This question led to an assignment for the kids to work on a drawing of their favorite room at home with their parents.  The students were also asked to answer questions like, Why is it you favorite room?  What is in this room?, etc.  This assignment was then brought in for class discussion and hung up on our wall display. The next phase of our project was to visit a site to further research our classmates' favorite rooms. The class took a trip to their fellow classmate’s home to observe an actual room. In visiting the student’s home, the class participated in some further research by exploring the student’s home and asking questions along the way.  We learned that this student enjoys being in his bedroom for most of the time, but he also likes the living room and the kitchen.  We took pictures of all the different rooms and generated many new ideas for the next section of the project.
The last and final stage of our project was to construct a 3D version of our favorite rooms by making a diorama. Before we started the actual construction of the dioramas, we had a class discussion about what kind of materials we could use to build our rooms. The student’s came up with ideas like, cups, boxes, straws, dollhouse furniture, pipe cleaners, and other various art supplies. Students then brought in things from home and used other materials around the school to create a 3D replica of their favorite rooms. We chose to present what we learned by putting our dioramas up for display in the classroom.

Preschool Art Project Example

including Africa, Asia, North America, Europe and Australia. Not only will we focus globally, but we will begin our journey by looking at art made right here in Jersey City. Typical visual aids such as photographs and books will be used as well as loaned items from the Newark Museum Educational Collection. Seeing actual artifacts has really helped engage the children and uncover their hidden creative abilities.
Some of the activities included in this project are a look at Jersey City’s public murals, plaster Dogon masks during our Africa unit, a Chinese lantern display and Aboriginal animal paintings.
The students discovered a mural create by a local graffiti artist and discussed the different images they saw. Back in the classroom the class used chalk to create their own mural.
